Is teaching what you thought it would be?

Teaching is honestly everything I thought it would be and more but I never thought that it would give me so much joy to not just greet my students every morning, but to actually be greeted back by them. It's such a great feeling when you see students genuinely smile at you because it shows that they're excited to come to your class.

Is there a day or time that started out one way but ended up with an unpleasant surprise?

I have a student in 5th period who I have a pretty good bond with. One day in particular was just like any other day in class, but after class I was walking in the hallway and happened to be walking next to this student. I tapped his shoulder to compliment his project in class but he ignored me. I thought he may have not heard me so I continued to get his attention. He quickly got defensive and told me not to talk to him, to leave him alone.
The next morning he came to my class before school and apologized, he said he was just aggravated at the moment and didn't want to talk to anyone. I'm glad he apologized but this situation was very shocking to me. It's not an attitude I was used to getting from students, especially from this student in particular.

Is there a time when you talked about a sensitive topic?

One day there was a girl showing the people at her table her bruises. Her table-mates told me to look at them, so I asked where they were from. The student told me that her boyfriend did them. The student and I talked after class, but it was such a difficult topic to discuss. I had never actually met anyone in this type of situation in my own life. My mentor and I reported the problem that same day.

Is there a time when you saw a student make a connection that indicated a success for you?

One of my most successful lessons was teaching my students 2-point perspective. I showed them how to draw 2-dimensional boxes from start to finish and it seemed like everyone was getting the hang of it. The next day one of my students came to class and told me that he used two-point perspective in his math class when asked to draw a box. I felt very accomplished to know that my student was able to use what he learned in art and apply it in another discipline.
